Pipe Ramming

HB Tunnelling delivers trenchless pipe ramming solutions for installing steel casings beneath roads, railways, and infrastructure with minimal excavation. Our methods provide a robust, efficient solution for utility and crossing installations.

Pipe Ramming Solutions

Pipe ramming is a trenchless construction method used to install steel pipes underground, typically beneath roads, railways, rivers, or buildings, without the need for open excavation.

A pneumatic hammer (rammer) repeatedly impacts the rear of the steel pipe, driving it horizontally through the ground while soil is removed from inside the pipe. Additional pipe sections are welded on sequentially as the drive advances to achieve the required installation length.

This method is commonly used for installing utility crossings, such as water, gas, sewer, telecommunications ducts, as well as railway and highway crossings. It is also well suited for installing culverts and protective casings for pipelines in a wide range of ground conditions.

Pipe Ramming Contractors

HB Tunnelling supports pipe ramming projects from early feasibility through to delivery, including ground assessment, launch pit planning, casing specification, welding strategy and installation methodology.

Minimal Surface Disruption

Works well in Cohesive Soils and Mixed Ground

Suitable for short to medium drives, typically up to 50–80m and potentially longer where ground conditions are favourable

Can Install Large-diameter Pipes

Limitations of Pipe Ramming

Pipe ramming is most effective in displaceable ground conditions where the surrounding soil can move for the advancing steel pipe. As the method is unguided, alignment accuracy is generally lower than steerable trenchless techniques, making careful planning essential for shorter or less precision-critical crossings.

The pneumatic ramming process generates noise and vibration during operation, which may require consideration when working near sensitive structures or within urban environments.
