Introduction

HBT were contacted by the client to construct a new sewer network for the restaurant and cinema complex adjacent to the MK Dons Football Stadium.

This project forms the latest phase of development at Stadium MK and the MK1 retail and leisure park.

HBT was appointed to install the new sewer network to facilitate the construction of eight single-storey restaurant units and the Odeon IMAX cinema complex.

Augerboring

Objective

Work began with the excavation of the shafts in preparation for the 225mm pipe installation.

The new foul network comprised 150 metres of pipework, installed in four separate sections using auger boring.

The first drive, however, did not get off to a smooth start. During the piloting operation from Shaft F20 to F19, an obstruction was encountered 7.5 metres into the drive.

The Challenge

Excavation began immediately, revealing a large boulder positioned directly in front of the pilot shoe. HBT removed the boulder, allowing the works to continue as planned.

The remaining drives were completed without any issues or adverse ground conditions.

“The works didn’t get off to a good start, but no one could have anticipated an isolated boulder underground. However, it was soon removed and the job was completed to a very high standard.”
- Chris Horsey

“Working with a great team at Stadium MK always makes a big difference to the success of our contracts. Well done to Chris and the McLaren team.”
- Hugh Boyle
