Introduction

Caldwell Construction Ltd commenced works for Seddon Homes in Newcastle-Under-Lyme building a new housing development and they required the installation of foul & storm outfall pipelines.

The issue that Caldwell Construction faced was that the foul and storm outfall pipelines had to cross the A34 Talke Road which is a very busy dual carriageway which could not be closed to allow for traditional open-cut methodology to be adopted.

Caldwell Construction Ltd appointed HB Tunnelling to undertake the works, and upon looking at the depth of the foul & storm lines and ground conditions HBT recommended that these could be installed using the guided auger bore technique.

Augerboring Front Steer

Objective

HBT undertook the CD622 management of geotechnical risk design, road monitoring, thrust wall design and the trenchless installation of the foul & storm pipelines via the Guided Auger Boring methodology using the Front Steer System which is used for drilling through mudstone/rock soil types.

The scope involved 2 no. 48Lm drives of DN450 concrete jacking pipes in mudstone. The project posed challenges in the form of the launch pit being in the junction of Beasley Avenue and Talke Road, Beasley Avenue is a residential street which was quite narrow and very limited on working area.

The Challenge

HBT working closely with Caldwell Construction opted for one large launch pit where both pipelines would be installed at different levels which were over 1 metre in depth difference. HBT then provided the temporary works design for the thrust wall, and headwalls which would be capable of withstanding the full thrust load of 150t if required by the GAB machine to be utilised, which was an Akerman 150t. Both the storm and foul drives were installed successfully without any significant issues and completed within the allocated durations and budget.
