Introduction

Hewitson Ltd contacted HBT to look at the possible trenchless works at the prestigious Alnwick Gardens. The works consist of sewer diversion within the gardens but the remit was the least disruption method to mitigate the surface damage to the gardens.

Upon HBT site visit, it soon became apparent why trenchless method was being looked at.

The Garden features the largest collection of European plants in the UK and the largest Japanese Cherry Orchard in the World.

HBT engineer undertook a technique risk assessment & discussed the risks with the client.

Objective

The contract was challenging due to the sensitive nature of the scheme set in idyllic grounds with limited working area as the sewer diversion has to pass under ornate flower beds & a water feature. Whilst on site a trial hole was undertaken to assess the ground conditions to see which technique would be the most cost effective & least disruptive.

The Challenge

Upon viewing the ground conditions and undertaking a penetrometer test, it was agreed with the client that guided augerboring would be the most suitable, cost effective option & least disruptive method. HBT were commissioned by Hewitson Ltd to undertake the works.

The works was planned to take 6 days using a 150t Akerman guided augerboring rig. HBT commenced on site to install the new 450mm sewer diversion & the works was completed in 6 days on time & budget.
