Secant Piling

HB Tunnelling provides secant piling solutions to support deep shafts, launch structures, reception shafts and underground infrastructure, launch structures and underground infrastructure, particularly where traditional shaft sinking methods are unsuitable due to ground conditions or project constraints.

Secant Piling Solutions for Shafts and Deep Excavations

Secant piling is a specialist ground engineering technique used to construct continuous retaining walls and groundwater cut-off systems. The method involves installing a series of overlapping reinforced concrete piles to form a structurally robust and watertight barrier capable of supporting deep excavations and controlling ground movement.

The secant piles are typically installed in a sequence of primary (soft) and secondary (reinforced) piles, which intersect to create a continuous secant pile wall. This construction approach provides both structural support and effective groundwater control, making it particularly suitable for deep shafts, basements, launch shafts, reception shafts and complex underground structures.

Secant Piling Applications

Secant piled walls are commonly used where excavation is required in difficult ground conditions, such as water-bearing sands, gravels or mixed ground, and where working space is limited. The system allows construction close to existing buildings, utilities and infrastructure while maintaining ground stability.
