Auger Boring

HB Tunnelling delivers guided and unguided auger boring solutions for sewer, duct and utility crossings, including works beneath roads, railways and existing infrastructure. Our trenchless techniques minimise disruption, reduce costs, and provide accurate, efficient underground infrastructure delivery.

Guided & Unguided Auger Boring Services for Trenchless Pipe Installation

What is Guided Auger Boring?

Guided Auger Boring (GAB), also known as thrust boring, is a preferred trenchless solution for installing small diameter gravity sewers and ducts in virgin ground where accuracy is critical.

GAB usually involves a three-pass process, whereby initially the line is piloted, then it is drilled using temporary casings and augers, and then the product is jacked in which in turn jacks out the steel casings.

Some of the benefits of using Guided Auger Boring include:

  • Accuracy to within 25mm over 50 linear metres, subject to ground conditions and project constraints (the guidance systems used are capable of +/- 0.1mm gradient adjustment).
  • Having a small footprint the GAB system offers less disruption to the public in terms of footpath & road closures.
  • Reduced costs overall in comparison to traditional open-cut due to less reinstatement and reduced excavated materials, resulting in a reduced carbon footprint.
  • GAB is the preferred methodology for installing gravity sewers under live railway tracks due to the minimal surface heave encountered and reduced settlement.
  • Typical diameters range from DN150 to DN1200, subject to ground conditions, length and project requirements.

What is Unguided Auger Boring?

Unguided Auger Boring is the traditional trenchless installation method used for shorter drive lengths where precise line and level control is not critical. It is commonly used for steel casing installations, pipeline crossings, and utility ducting.

Unguided Auger Boring is typically installed from a long launch pit enabling the installation of 6 metre or 12m long steel sleeves which can assist line and level control over short drive lengths.
