3D Modelling & Survey Works

At HBT, our surveyors have many years of experience in topographical surveys, in particular for trenchless crossings of National Highways, Network Rail and Canal and River Trust assets.

3D Modelling for Tunnel Construction: Dynamic Visualisation for Excavation Projects.

Accurate survey data is fundamental to informed design and successful project delivery. Our surveying services provide a comprehensive understanding of existing site conditions, capturing both above-ground and below-water features with precision. Using advanced equipment and processing techniques, we deliver reliable, high-quality data and models that reduce construction risk, improve constructability and support project delivery across a wide range of tunnel construction projects.

Topographical Survey

A topographical survey is a detailed measurement and mapping process used to capture the natural and man-made features of a site. Typically, our excavation surveys include all on-site features, level, height and layout details, plus offsite details such as adjacent structures, roads, overhanging trees/vegetation and height/position of other features of potential interest.

The equipment is tailored to suit the specific project; typically, this will be either a 1-man robotic setup or a traditional 2-man team. All the instruments have reflectorless capability for remotely measuring detail which cannot otherwise be accessed. GPS is used increasingly to fix height and position true to Ordnance Survey grid and datum.

Survey data is then processed using proprietary software and output is typically in AutoCad DWG format although requests for all of the other typically encountered electronic formats can usually be accommodated.

Survey outputs are routinely used for shaft positioning, utility clash avoidance and construction sequencing.

Bathymetric Survey

Alternatively, we offer bathymetric surveying, also known as a hydrographic survey, which is the underwater equivalent to a topographical survey, mapping out shapes and depth of underwater terrain. This survey technique typically requires the use of a remote-controlled vehicle with a portable echosounder. This allows soft bed levels to be surveyed in all types of water courses or lakes. We can gain the required first reflective surface level data to satisfy a client’s requests while avoiding the logistical difficulties and health and safety concerns around this work. If hard bed levels are also required, a manned boat can be used to allow physical dip of the waterbed with an extended detail pole.

Once the surveys have been completed, we can develop 3D models and detailed sections of waterways derived from the survey data. These models provide an accurate digital representation of existing site conditions, surface features and complex geological features and are used to support real world design development.
